Wednesday, 17 September 2025 – The Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Institute of Defence and Strategic Studies (SHHBIDSS) attended the 17^th ASEAN-Australia-New Zealand (AANZ) Dialogue, co-organised by the Institute of Strategic & International Studies (ISIS) Malaysia, Asia Link Australia and Asia New Zealand Foundation from 17 to 19 September 2025 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Representing the Institute were Dr Sabrina Daud, Assistant Director, and Ms Muizzah Harun, Research Officer.

As the only Track 1.5 forum dedicated to exploring ASEAN, Australia and New Zealand engagement, the AANZ Dialogue provides a unique platform for policymakers, practitioners, academics, journalists, and other thought leaders to come together in fostering mutual understanding and meaningful discussion. For the 17^th iteration, the dialogue assessed the future of ASEAN's roles and functions, including efforts of the current Malaysian Chair, inter-regional cooperation and the state of dialogue partner outreach. The sessions also explored pressing regional issues, such as Artificial Intelligence (AI) governance, transnational crime, as well as opportunities for role building in the Indo-Pacific.

The Dialogue also featured a Next Generation (NextGen) component, which included a workshop and roundtable discussion to address geopolitical and security challenges in Southeast Asia and the wider Asia-Pacific, aimed at empowering emerging leaders in Track 2 diplomacy.

The 17^th AANZ Dialogue represented the first time the Institute had been invited to partake in the dialogue, with this year's iteration exploring a wider range of pertinent issues. The Institute remains committed to advancing regional strategic dialogue by actively participating in key forums, such as the 17^th AANZ Dialogue. This Dialogue demonstrates the value of strengthened partnerships, as well as transparent knowledge exchange and interdisciplinary cooperation, which supports the Institute's contributions to regional stability and collaborative defence diplomacy.

DIALOG ASEAN-AUSTRALIA-NEW ZEALAND KE-17 2025

Rabu, 17 September 2025 - Institut Pengajian Pertahanan dan Strategik Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah (IPPSSHHB) baru-baru ini menghadiri Dialog ASEAN-Australia-New Zealand (AANZ) ke-17, yang dianjurkan bersama oleh Institut Kajian Strategik dan Antarabangsa (ISIS) Malaysia, Asia Link Australia dan Asia New Zealand Foundation dari 17 hingga 19 September 2025 di Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Mewakili Institut ialah Penolong Pengarah IPPSSHHB, Dr Sabrina Daud, dan Muizzah Harun, Pegawai Penyelidik IPPSSHHB.

Sebagai satu-satunya forum diplomasi landasan Trek 1.5 yang menerokai hubungan ASEAN, Australia dan New Zealand, Dialog AANZ merupakan platform unik untuk penggubal dasar, ahli akademik, wartawan, dan para pemimpin lain berkumpul bagi memupuk pemahaman bersama dan perbincangan bermakna. Bagi edisi ke-17, dialog tersebut menilai masa depan peranan dan fungsi ASEAN, termasuk usaha-usaha Malaysia sebagai Pengerusi ASEAN, kerjasama antara rantau dan status hubungan dengan rakan dialog. Dialog tersebut juga mengetengahkan isu serantau semasa seperti tadbir urus Kecerdasan Buatan (AI), jenayah rentas negara, serta peluang pembinaan peranan di kawasan Indo-Pasifik.

Dialog ini turut menampilkan komponen Next Generation (NextGen), yang merangkumi bengkel dan perbincangan meja bulat untuk menangani cabaran geopolitik dan keselamatan di Asia Tenggara serta Asia-Pasifik yang lebih luas, bertujuan memerkasakan pemimpin muda dalam diplomasi landasan Trek 2.

Dialog AANZ ke-17 merupakan kali pertama Institut dijemput untuk menyertai forum tersebut, dengan edisi tahun ini meneroka isu-isu yang lebih luas. Pihak Institut kekal komited untuk memajukan dialog strategik serantau dengan penyertaan aktif dalam forum-forum, seperti Dialog AANZ ke-17 ini. Dialog ini menunjukkan nilai kerjasama yang diperkukuh, serta pertukaran pengetahuan yang telus dan kerjasama antara disiplin, yang menyokong sumbangan Institut kepada kestabilan serantau serta diplomasi pertahanan.​
