TRACK II NETWORK OF ASEAN DEFENCE AND SECURITY INSTITUTIONS (NADI) MEETING ON “THE EMERGING SECURITY ARCHITECTURE IN ASIA-PACIFIC, ASSESSMENT OF IMPLICATIONS, AND RECOMMENDATIONS FOR ASEAN”




SIEM REAP, Thursday, 19 September 2024 – The Track II Network of ASEAN Defence and Security Institutions (NADI) Meeting themed “The Emerging Security Architecture in Asia-Pacific, Assessment of Implications, and Recommendations for ASEAN" was organised by the General Department of Policy and Foreign Affairs (GDPFA), Ministry of National Defence, Cambodia at the Memoire Palace Resort and Spa, Siem Reap, Cambodia beginning today.



 

The two-day meeting was chaired by Lieutenant General Nem Sowathey, Deputy Director-General of Policy and Foreign Affairs (GDPFA), Director of Sena Techo Unit, Ministry of Defence of Cambodia, and attended by all members of NADI. Keynote addresses were also delivered by General Nem Sowath, Director- General of Policy and Foreign Affairs, Cambodia's ADSOM Leader. Representing Brunei Darussalam was Abdul Malik Kamis, Acting Director of Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Institute of Defence and Strategic Studies (SHHBIDSS).



 

The meeting was divided into two sessions: Session 1 on the “Assessment of Emerging Security Partnerships in Asia-Pacific and Its Impact on ASEAN Centrality and Unity", which Acting Director of SHHBIDSS presented a paper on; and Session 2 on “Managing Proliferation and Addressing Duality of Technological Application (AI and Cybersecurity) within ASEAN". The NADI members held in-depth discussions, including on how ASEAN can better address the challenges it will face from the two key areas. Significantly, this NADI meeting followed through with the suggestion in the previous meeting in Krabi, Thailand in July by having two experts provide insights on the meeting's topics.

 

Inaugurated in 2007, NADI is a Track II platform that brings in policy analysts, researchers, academics and defence officials specialising in defence and security together to discuss issues related to defence and security cooperation and to develop recommendations to support the ADMM.

SIEM REAP, Khamis, 19 September 2024 – Mesyuarat Trek II Rangkaian Institusi Pertahanan dan Keselamatan ASEAN (NADI) dengan tema “Kemunculan Arkitektur Keselamatan di Asia-Pasifik, Penilaian Implikasi dan Cadangan untuk ASEAN" yang dikelolakan oleh General Department of Policy and Foreign Affairs (GDPFA), Kementerian Pertahanan Negara, Kemboja telah diadakan di Memoire Palace Resort and Spa, Siem Reap, Kemboja bermula hari ini.

 

Mesyuarat tersebut berlangsung dalam tempoh dua hari dan dipengerusikan oleh Leftenan Jeneral Nem Sowathey, Timbalan Ketua Pengarah Policy and Foreign Affairs, Pengarah Sena Techo Unit, Kementerian Pertahanan Negara Kemboja, dan telah dihadiri oleh kesemua ahli NADI. Ucaptama juga disampaikan oleh Leftenan Jeneral Nem Sowathey, Ketua Pengarah Policy and Foreign Affairs dan Ketua ADSOM Kemboja. Hadir mewakili Negara Brunei Darussalam ialah Abdul Malik Kamis, Pemangku Pengarah Institut Pengajian Pertahanan dan Strategik Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah (IPPSSHHB). 

 

Semasa mesyuarat tersebut dibahagikan kepada dua sesi: Sesi pertama mengenai “Penilaian kemunculan Perkongsian-Perkongsian Keselamatan di Asia-Pasifik, dan kesannya terhadap ASEAN Centrality and Unity" iaitu yang mana Pemangku Pengarah IPPSSHHB telah menyampaikan pembentangan kertas kerja; dan Sesi kedua mengenai Managing Proliferation dan Application of Technologies seperti Artificial Intelligence (AI) dan Keselamatan Siber dalam ASEAN". Kesemua ahli NADI mengadakan perbincangan secara terperinci termasuk mengenai cadangan-cadangan kepada ASEAN untuk menangani lebih baik cabaran-cabaran yang bakal dihadapi dalam dua bidang tersebut. Mesyuarat ini telah mengambil saranan dari mesyuarat NADI di Krabi, Thailand pada bulan Julai lepas dengan mendatangkan dua pakar untuk memberi perspektif mereka mengenai topik-topik mesyuarat.

 

Ditubuhkan pada 2007, NADI ialah landasan Trek II yang menemukan semua penganalisa dasar, penyelidik, ahli akademik dan pegawai-pegawai pertahanan berkepakaran dalam isu-isu pertahanan dan sekuriti untuk membincangkan isu- isu berkaitan kerjasama dibidang pertahanan dan sekuriti seterusnya memberikan cadangan-cadangan bagi mendokong ADMM. ​
